Guide to Tipping and Splitting Bills

In the United States, the standard tip for restaurant service is 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appropriate, while 10% to 15% may be given for below-average experiences. Keep in mind that many servers rely on tips as a significant portion of their income, as the federal tipped minimum wage is considerably lower than the standard minimum wage.

When dining with a group, splitting the bill evenly is the simplest approach, but it may not always be the fairest. If one person ordered significantly more than others, consider splitting based on individual orders. Many restaurants can split the check by seat, or you can use a tip calculator to divide both the bill and tip proportionally among everyone at the table.

Tipping customs vary widely around the world. In Japan and South Korea, tipping is generally not expected and can even be considered rude. In much of Europe, a service charge is often included in the bill, though rounding up is appreciated. In countries like Canada and Mexico, tipping practices are similar to the US. When traveling internationally, research local customs beforehand to avoid awkward situations and show respect for cultural norms.
