Understanding Your Body Mass Index

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used screening measure that estimates body fat based on your weight and height. The formula divides your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters. Our calculator supports both metric and imperial units, so you can enter values in whichever system you prefer.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies BMI into four main categories: underweight (below 18.5), normal weight (18.5 to 24.9), overweight (25 to 29.9), and obese (30 and above). These ranges help identify potential health risks associated with being significantly under or over a healthy weight range.

It is important to understand that BMI has limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat, so athletes may show a high BMI despite being in excellent health. BMI also does not account for age, gender, or body composition differences. For a complete picture of your health, consult a healthcare provider who can evaluate BMI alongside other measurements like waist circumference and body fat percentage.
